Another yearbook spotlight from www.breakfastattiffneys.tumblr.com! This book is from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology 2011 and the more I look at it, the more I love it. I don’t understand why it didn’t win a crown, maybe they’ll capture a Pacemaker? Their book has come so far in the past few years and I can’t wait to see what they come up with for 2012! Below is what one of their team leaders has to say about the book:
TJHSST is a science and tech school, and it is one of the quirkiest schools in Northern VA. You can walk into the school on any day and you’ll see kids walking down the hallway screaming carols, a group of seniors moving around a couch, backpacks scattered over lockers with no fear of things getting stolen, students being allowed to eat anywhere at lunch (including outside and in hallways), etc. The yearbook staff wanted to be able to explain all of these strange aspects of TJ to the student body. Thus, came along ‘We Can Explain.’ It is also the school’s 25th anniversary book so the theme went hand in hand with that.
The cover features the senior class at a homecoming pep rally, equipped with vuvuzelas. Another quirk is that our pep rallies often get a little crazy, so we start from the cover with a very evident oddity. Starting on the cover we also use a blend of a messy more handwriting type font and a sans serif font. We also used arrows to point to explanations or to lead you on to specific aspects of stories. The very horizontal aspect continues on throughout the endsheets, opening, and closing.
The book was split into three sections, why?, how? and who? We figured those were the the first three questions that came to mind when you needed an explanation. Every spread was placed into why or how depending on the content. Who was the people section. For example, the spread on homecoming asking week was why, because we thought of it as ‘why do you do crazy things to ask a girl to hc?’ But then the spread on tj in the news was in how because we thought of it as ‘how do you get on the news?’ Most sports had a spread in why and how.
In the people section, we profiled students that had stories that needed.. well, explaining. The headline would be (for example) “Who published three books?” and instead of giving away the person we profiled, we used an arrow to point to the person’s name in the mugshot portion.
Overall, the book did exactly what we wanted it to do, explain. We looked at what brought TJ to its 25th anniversary and how the school has become what it is today, and I think the student body really enjoyed it.
